Commemorative Bank Note for 250th Anniversary
of the Royal and Ancient Golf Club

Commemorative Bank Note for 250th Anniversary of the Royal and Ancient Golf Club (Front)
The front of the normal Royal Bank of Scotland £5 note incorporates the crest of the Royal and Ancient Golf Club in gold and the serial numbers are all prefixed with "R&A", the abbreviation known to golfers the world over. Of course, the Royal Bank is even older than the R&A (it was founded by Royal Charter in 1727). But it is just possible that Lord Ilay, the bank's first Governor (that's his portrait on the note) played golf as the sport has been recorded in Scotland as far back as 1457!

Commemorative Bank Note for 250th Anniversary of the Royal and Ancient Golf Club (Reverse)

The reverse of this commemorative note shows the R&A clubhouse in St Andrews and the 18th green on the "Old Course". Also illustrated are the captain's silver clubs and golf balls, the famous Claret Jug which is contested each year in The Open Golf Championship held at various UK links courses each year. The portrait shows Old Tom Morris, one of the 19th century "characters" of golf at St Andrews - he won the Open Championship at the age of 17.
