Scottish Castles Photo Library
- Inverkip Castle, Ayrshire
There was a castle here in the 13th century which was captured by the English during the War of Independence.
The land was acquired by the Stewarts in 1390 and they built the present castle in the 15th century. It consists of a square keep, three storeys high plus a garret, with a main entrance on the first floor, accessed by an external stair.
The castle was abandoned in the early 19th century when the mansion of Ardgowan was built nearby. The castle is not open to the public - but a friendly gardener escorted me to the castle so that I could take some photographs.
