- Levan Castle, Inverclyde
Levan Castle was built around 1500 by the Morton family on a site high above the estuary of the river Clyde, near present day Gourock. In 1547 it was sold to the Sempills and later in 1649 to the Stewarts
The castle is made up of two rectangular blocks, touching at one corner. One of the blocks was the original keep and the adjoining building is a 16th century tower.
The castle is said to be haunted by the ghost of Lady Montgomery who was starved to death by her husband for mistreating local peasants.
The castle became a ruin but has been restored and takes paying guests.
