- The Barras
"The Barras" market is a Glasgow institution. Located in the east-end of the city off the Gallowgate, there are stalls there selling cut-price goods of every description. While originally aimed at customers with limited finance, it has a reputation for catering also for people from the better-off parts of Glasgow. It is only open at weekends.
Forever associated with the Barras is the Barrowland Ballroom next door. Glasgow used to be a dance-crazy city and in 1937 there were over 200 halls licensed for public dancing. While ballroom dancing is no longer popular, modern discos keep up Glasgow's reputation as a "swinging city".
