Lighthouse Beacons from Scotland
Mull of Galloway Lighthouse, Dumfries & GallowayThis is the index page for information and illustrations on a large number of Scottish lighthouses.
These pages were previously included on the former "Scottish Radiance" Web site. But Sharma Krauskopf, who began that site in 1997, has kindly given permission for the content to be included in Rampant Scotland. Sharma was so enthusiastic about lighthouses - and Scottish lighthouses in particular - that she bought the lighthouse keeper's cottage at Eshaness in Shetland.
Scotland has a long coastline and many islands - the coast of mainland Scotland measures about 4174 miles (6718 kms) but adding the islands of Arran, Islay and Jura, Shetland and Orkney, and the Western Isles brings the total coastline to 11,550 miles (18,588 kms) according to the British Cartographic Society. So lighthouses became an important feature on the Scottish coastal landscape. Scots also made a major contribution to lighthouse building - particularly the Stevenson family and Scottish physicist Sir David Brewster who is credited with convincing the United Kingdom to adopt "Fresnel" lenses in their lighthouses, invented by a Frenchman.
NOTE 1 - There is a Map showing the locations of most of the Scottish lighthouses - you can click on this to enlarge the scale slightly.
NOTE 2 - this index is a "work-in-progress" and further pages will be added soon (Scottish Radiance had nearly 100 pages in their collection) - so make sure you bookmark this page and check back for more on Scottish lighthouses.
