Sir George Martin and Sir Jimmy Shand

George Martin, the 'fifth Beatle', who died in March is best known for his pioneering work at Abbey Road with the Fab Four - graphic is of George Martin backstage at the "LOVE" concert, © Adam Sharp, via Wikimedia Commons.

But there is a particular Scottish connection which pre-dates the Liverpool Sound. George Martin produced a number of Scottish country dance records and in 1955 Jimmy Shand hit the charts with his wonderful Bluebell Polka. (Graphic on the left is from the Jimmy Shand memorial statue in Auchtermuchty, Fife).

By all accounts both George and Jimmy were perfect gentleman and were highly respected both in the studio and in the wider world.

There is a short BBC video clip featuring Jimmy Shand at Jimmy Shand and the Bluebell Polka which was one of those produced by George Martin in 1985.
