- Expletives and Exclamations

This is not the place for swearing, but here a number of words and phrases you might hear

  • "Crivvens" - This is a mild exclamation of surprise and may originally have been a shortened form of "Christ defend us."
  • "Help ma boab" - an exclamation of astonishment or exasperation.
  • "Jings" - Another mild mannered expression as in "Jings, is that the right time?" Related no doubt to the English "By jingo"
  • "Losh!" - an exclamation derived from "Lord!"
  • "Michty me" - another phrase indicating surprise or impatience as in "Michty me, have ye no' finished that yet?"
