Star Turn
Often when hiring a car, cost is the driving factor. For a weekend break, you want a small economical car and a hassle free service. 1car1.com aims to offer a range of cars where everything is included in the price with no extra insurance, mileage restrictions or price fluctuations.

For our trip from Edinburgh to Philipburn Country House, we hired a Mercedes A Class. This mini Merc is a practical yet stylish compromise between a people-carrier and a city car. Its looks are chic and it has the all-important Stuttgart star on the grille. There may be larger and more expensive cars in the hotel car park, but the A-Class will still attract attention.

Fittingly for a car that is the most expensive in its class, it feels solidly built and the equipment compares well with its bigger relatives.

Out on the road as we wind through the valleys into the Borders the car is comfortable although the ride is on the firm side. The handling is well sorted with high levels of grip and stability. The feel of the car takes a bit of getting used to, as the steering wheel has to be turned far from centre before you get a response. This demands a bit of concentration as we follow S-bends through the valleys. Any initial concerns that the 1.4 engine would only be suited to school runs, were quickly dispelled. The little Merc can keep up with traffic on the A roads and even indulge in a bit of overtaking if required. Fuel consumption seemed fairly good giving us 2 days use on around half a tank.

The little Merc put in a star performance proving that the best things really do come in small packages.
