Battling the Scottish Weather

The 144th Open was a wonderful golfing spectacular this year - as always. It was played on the old Course at St Andrews in Fife - the home of golf.

But the Scottish climate made its presence felt with heavy rain stopping play on one occasion and high winds causing further delays. The contest had to carry on into Monday, only the 2nd time in its history that this has happened.

Next year's event will be at Royal Troon where the popular 2015 winner, Zach Johnson, will defend his title. American Zach Johnson won his second major title with victory in a three-man play-off on a thrilling final day.

The graphic below was taken a few years ago and shows the photos of winners of the Open Golf Winners in recent years illustrated on an open-topped, double-decker tour bus - showing from Sam Snead in 1946, through Jack Nicklaus in 1970 and 1978 to Tiger Woods in 2000 and 2005 and 2006. The photos prior to Jack Nicklaus are in black and white, rather than colour.
