Teacake That Is Conquering the World
Dancing Tunnock's teacakes played a starring role in the opening ceremony of the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow in 2014.

The event spiced up demand and now the Lanarkshire manufacturer of the chocolate and marshmallow treat has been struggling to feed the revamped global appetite.

Tunnock's sold an extra 15 million of the cakes in the year after the games, taking Tunnock's to a record turnover, which has almost doubled in the space of five years.

The company has invested in new machinery to increase production, and tours of the factory at Uddingston are fully booked until 2017.

Fergus Loudon, the operations director, said that the opening ceremony had been pivotal in improving sales. "The games organisers contacted me last February and asked if we would be happy with them using our brand, but I had no idea what they were planning," he said. "When we sat down to watch the opening ceremony we were absolutely flabbergasted.

"After that the phones started ringing off the hook. There was an enormous worldwide spike in the demand for teacakes. (Graphic via Wikimedia Commons )"

The games ceremony was watched by ten million television viewers in Britain, as well as one billion worldwide
