This Commemorative £20 note was issued on Monday 10th May 1999 to mark Glasgow as the UK City of Architecture and Design for 1999. There were five million pieces printed and the first 50,000 pieces had a special prefix G/AD denoting the Bank's link to Glasgow, architecture and design and were signed by John Wright, the bank's recently appointed Chief Executive.
The face of the note depicts Alexander Thomson who was born in Balfron, Stirlingshire in 1817 and died in Glasgow in 1875. The note is dated 9 April which was his birthday. He designed many buildings in and around Glasgow in a classical style which earned him the nick-name 'Greek' Thomson.
