Tolbooth Kirk

Also known as St John's Highland Church, it has the highest steeple of all the churches in Edinburgh (73 metres, 240 feet). Located on the Lawnmarket, just down from the castle, this Gothic landmark was built in 1839/44 to house the General assembly of the Church of Scotland. The spire is framed by the towers of the (later) Free Church of Scotland building across the street (now the temporary home of the Scottish Parliament).

After the congregation moved to Greyfriar's Kirk (where services are held in both Gaelic and English), the church lay empty for many years. It was eventually refurbished - as the main ticket office and meeting place for the Edinburgh Festival.
